Teach Children Their Identity and Everything Around Them

Children should not be considered too young to learn important information about themselves, their families, their homes and the world around them. Teaching children these basic details is also a form of security education.

Many children are naturally brilliant, observant and curious. Parents can use these qualities to teach them simple but important information that can help them stay safe, alert and confident in an emergency.

Parents should train their children to memorise important details such as their parents’ telephone numbers and an alternative contact number in case one line is unavailable or there is a network problem. They should also know their home and school addresses, as well as familiar landmarks around their home and neighbourhood that can help them identify their location.

Depending on their age and level of understanding, children should also be taught basic information about themselves, including their age, genotype and blood group. They should know the names and ages of their siblings and be able to identify trusted adults they can turn to when they need help.

Security-conscious parents should not wait until their children are grown before teaching them these simple but valuable lessons. Early security education can help children develop awareness, confidence and the ability to respond appropriately when faced with unfamiliar or difficult situations.

Parents should also teach children when and how to share personal information. They should understand that not every stranger needs to know their home address, school details, parents’ phone numbers or other private information. Security education should therefore combine knowledge with good judgment.

Quote:

“Parents should not wait until their children grow old before training them to know things that are very important.”

Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
