Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or Campaign Voted Greatest in Award History

France Football fan poll recognises the Portuguese star’s outstanding 2007–08 season, when he led Manchester United to Premier League and Champions League glory.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or-winning campaign has been voted the greatest in the history of the prestigious individual football award in a fan poll organised by French magazine France Football.

Ronaldo earned the 2008 Ballon d’Or after delivering an exceptional season with Manchester United, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading footballers through his goalscoring performances and contributions to the club’s success.

During the 2007–08 season, the Portuguese forward scored 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester United, including 31 goals in the Premier League, where he finished as the competition’s leading scorer.

His performances helped Manchester United win the Premier League title before the club defeated Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final in Moscow. Ronaldo scored United’s opening goal in the final, which ended 1–1 after extra time before United won the penalty shootout.

His individual achievements and contribution to Manchester United’s success strengthened his position in the race for the 2008 Ballon d’Or, which he won ahead of Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres.

The award marked Ronaldo’s first Ballon d’Or triumph and the beginning of a career in which he would become one of the most decorated players in football history.

The France Football fan poll places renewed attention on the campaign that established Ronaldo as the leading individual performer of that football season.

The result also highlights the lasting influence of his 2008 performances, which remain a major reference point in discussions about the greatest individual seasons in modern football.

Although fan polls reflect public opinion rather than an official historical ranking, the recognition underscores the enduring reputation of Ronaldo’s breakthrough season at Manchester United.
