Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has shared his views on accountability and public apologies, advising people not to accept a private apology for disrespect that occurred publicly.
“Never accept a private apology for public disrespect,” the actor said.
The statement has drawn attention to the importance of accountability when an individual is embarrassed, insulted or disrespected in front of others. It suggests that when an offence occurs publicly, an apology should be made in a manner that acknowledges the wrongdoing before the same audience.
Public disagreements involving celebrities, colleagues, friends and public figures often generate conversations about respect, personal boundaries and how people should resolve conflicts.
While private apologies can help resolve personal disputes, the message emphasises that a public apology may be appropriate when the harm or embarrassment was caused publicly.
Dele Odule, a respected figure in the Yoruba-language film industry, has enjoyed a long career in Nollywood, earning recognition for his performances in Yoruba films and his contributions to Nigerian cinema.
His reported remark has renewed discussion about the relationship between respect, accountability and the responsibility to correct wrongdoing openly when it occurs in public.
