Argentine football star Lionel Messi has been confirmed as the new owner of Spanish second-division club CD Eldense, marking his second club ownership venture in Spain in 2026.
CD Eldense officially announced the acquisition on Thursday, October 1, describing Messi’s arrival as the beginning of a new long-term chapter in the club’s more than 100-year history. The club said the project will focus on sporting, institutional and social development.
The acquisition makes Eldense Messi’s first ownership involvement in a professional Spanish football club. Earlier this year, he acquired UE Cornellà, which competes in Spain’s lower divisions.
Eldense, founded in 1921 and based in Elda in Alicante, currently competes in LaLiga Hypermotion, Spain’s second tier. The club said Messi’s involvement is intended to help strengthen its sporting structure while preserving its history and identity.
Messi’s acquisition involves the shares previously held by Colombian investment group TH Soluciones. The financial terms of the transaction have not been publicly disclosed.
The takeover had initially been announced as an agreement in principle in September, pending completion of legal procedures and approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD). The club’s latest announcement formally confirmed the acquisition while noting that the required regulatory authorisation remains part of the process.
The development expands Messi’s growing involvement in football beyond his playing career. The 39-year-old continues to play for Inter Miami while now adding a professional Spanish club to his growing football investment portfolio.
Eldense said Messi’s ownership represents an opportunity to develop the club over the long term and establish a stronger presence in Spanish professional football.
The move also puts Messi among a growing group of high-profile footballers who have become involved in club ownership and investment while still active in the sport.
