A tragic double murder has shocked the community of Oberlin, Ohio, after a college professor and his wife were found shot dead in their home, with their 31-year-old son facing charges over the killings.

The victims were identified as Pipo Nguyen-Duy, 64, a studio art and photography professor at Oberlin College, and his wife, Tran Thi Nam Phong, 56. Their bodies were discovered on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect, identified by police as Daniel Jones, was arrested and arraigned on Thursday, October 29, on charges including murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.

The court appearance drew attention after officers had to carry the handcuffed and shackled suspect into the courtroom. He was later wheeled out in a chair.

During the hearing, the defendant told the court that their name was Asia Nguyen-Duy and that they identified as gender-neutral. Authorities have also referred to the defendant by the name Daniel Jones.

Prosecutors told the court that the suspect allegedly told police they had killed their family and directed officers to the victims’ home. The prosecutor also said the defendant’s mother had contacted police, expressing concern about their mental health and need for medication.

A judge set bail at $3 million. The defendant did not enter a plea, and the case is expected to proceed before a grand jury.

Police have not disclosed a motive for the killings, and the allegations remain subject to court proceedings.

Nguyen-Duy had taught at Oberlin College since 1998 and was a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for photography. His death has prompted mourning across the college community.
