The Nigerian Grammy-winning singer says American R&B star Toni Braxton receives a significant share of the royalties from his hit song because it samples her 2000 classic, ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’.
Nigerian singer Burna Boy has revealed that American R&B singer Toni Braxton receives 60 per cent of the streaming royalties generated by his hit single, ‘Last Last’.
The Grammy-winning artiste made the disclosure while discussing the financial arrangement behind the song, which became one of the biggest records of his career.
The song samples Braxton’s 2000 hit, ‘He Wasn’t Man Enough’, and Burna Boy explained that using the original recording was an idea he had considered before Nigerian producer Chopstix helped bring it to life.
During an appearance on the American podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game, hosted by Gillie Da King and Wallo267, Burna Boy said he was comfortable with the arrangement and had no complaints about the percentage received by the American singer.
He was quoted as saying: “But she is taking 60 per cent of it. I’m not complaining. Hopefully, she even comes out to one of the shows.”
The singer had also previously clarified that Braxton’s 60 per cent share applies to the song’s streaming royalties, not its entire earnings. He disclosed that ‘Last Last’ had earned him more money than any other song in his career at the time.
Released in May 2022, ‘Last Last’ became one of Burna Boy’s biggest international hits, drawing attention to the role of sampling and royalty-sharing agreements in the music industry.
The arrangement illustrates how artists whose original recordings are sampled can receive a substantial share of the royalties generated by new versions of their work. Burna Boy +2
