Vivian Wilson, the transgender daughter of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has spoken about her financial independence, revealing that she lives in Los Angeles with three roommates because sharing accommodation makes living expenses more affordable.
Wilson, 21, is one of Musk’s children with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson. Despite her father’s enormous wealth, she says she does not have access to an inheritance or the kind of financial resources many people might assume are available to her.
In an interview with New York Magazine, Wilson explained that she does not have hundreds of thousands of dollars at her disposal and has to manage her finances like many other young adults.
“I don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars at my disposal. College is expensive. I don’t have that inheritance,” she said.
Wilson’s relationship with her father has been publicly strained for several years. In 2022, at the age of 18, she legally changed her name and gender, requesting that her new identity be recognised and that she no longer be associated with her biological father.
The development attracted international attention, particularly after Musk made controversial comments about her during a 2024 interview, claiming that his child had been influenced by what he described as the “woke mind virus.”
Wilson subsequently responded publicly, criticising her father’s comments and describing him in unflattering terms.
Despite the public attention surrounding their family relationship, Wilson has continued building her own career in the fashion and entertainment industries.
She gained wider recognition after appearing on the cover of Teen Vogue in 2025 and has since pursued modelling opportunities, including runway appearances during New York Fashion Week.
She has also spoken about managing her everyday expenses, explaining that she can afford basic necessities, maintain friendships, pay for accommodation and enjoy some personal spending money.
Her account has renewed discussions about family wealth, inheritance, financial independence and the complicated relationships that can exist between wealthy parents and their children.
While Elon Musk’s fortune places him among the world’s wealthiest individuals, Wilson’s comments suggest that she does not consider her father’s financial status a reflection of her own economic circumstances.
Her story has also generated conversations about whether choosing to live independently from an extremely wealthy family represents personal conviction, family estrangement or simply an individual’s decision about how to build their life.
For Wilson, however, the immediate reality appears straightforward: she is pursuing her career, sharing accommodation and managing her finances without relying on the billionaire fortune associated with her family name.
