Abeokuta Taxi Drivers Now Display Vehicle Plate Numbers Inside Cars for Passenger Safety

Passengers can now easily identify taxis as drivers write their plate numbers on the back of front seats, a move praised for improving accountability.

In Abeokuta, Ogun State, an unusual yet practical innovation has emerged among local taxi drivers: writing vehicle plate numbers on the back of front seats.

The measure, observed across several taxis in the city, appears to be a voluntary effort by drivers to enhance passenger safety and make it easier for commuters to report vehicles if necessary. Passengers can now quickly identify taxis and recall their plate numbers without needing to step out of the vehicle.

Some drivers explained that this practice was intended to reduce disputes and build trust between passengers and operators. “Many passengers often forget the plate number, which can be a problem if they need to report anything. Writing it inside the car is a simple way to solve this,” one driver told our correspondent.

While not mandated by any official transport regulation, the initiative has been welcomed by commuters, who say it improves accountability and makes them feel safer while riding in taxis. Transport observers note that this kind of grassroots innovation reflects a broader trend of informal safety measures adopted by drivers in urban centers across Nigeria.

As more drivers adopt the practice, passengers in Abeokuta can now ride with added confidence, knowing they can easily verify their taxi if needed.
