Viral social media post sparks widespread reactions on changing views about marriage, boundaries, mental health, and digital-age infidelity
A prominent Nigerian lawyer and social commentator, Tunde (@tunde_naija), has ignited a wave of online debate after asserting that rising divorce rates in the current generation are not a sign that love is dying, but evidence that people are becoming less willing to tolerate dysfunction in marriage.
In a widely shared post on X (formerly Twitter), the lawyer argued that modern relationships are being reshaped by increased awareness of personal rights, emotional boundaries, and mental health. According to him, the long-held belief that marriage must be preserved “at all costs” is gradually giving way to a more conscious approach that prioritises well-being, respect, and alignment between partners.
He noted that infidelity has become more visible and more accessible in the digital era, with social media platforms, messaging apps, and online secrecy making cheating easier to commit and harder to detect. This, he said, has significantly eroded trust in many marriages, leaving couples struggling to maintain emotional security and transparency.
The lawyer further explained that today’s generation is not necessarily walking away from love, but from betrayal, neglect, emotional abuse, and fundamental misalignment of values. In his view, choosing divorce is increasingly seen as an act of self-preservation rather than failure, especially where relationships become harmful or irreparably broken.
The post quickly gained traction, drawing thousands of reactions from users who either agreed that increased self-awareness has empowered people to leave unhealthy marriages, or argued that modern society has become too quick to give up on commitment and conflict resolution. While some praised the shift as progress, others warned that reduced tolerance could weaken the institution of marriage if not balanced with patience and communication.
As conversations around marriage, mental health, and digital relationships continue to evolve, the viral post has underscored a broader societal shift: one in which personal well-being and emotional safety are increasingly placed at the centre of intimate relationships.
