China Unveils 600 km/h Maglev Train, Now the World’s Fastest


New magnetic levitation technology could cut Beijing–Shanghai travel time to 2.5 hours with zero direct emissions

China has unveiled a 600 kilometre-per-hour (373 miles per hour) magnetic levitation, or maglev, train, setting a new global benchmark as the world’s fastest ground-based commercial train system. The next-generation transport technology is expected to significantly reduce travel time between major cities, including slashing the Beijing–Shanghai journey to approximately 2.5 hours.

Powered by advanced magnetic levitation technology, the high-speed train operates by lifting slightly above the track using electromagnetic force, eliminating direct contact with rails. This design reduces friction, enhances energy efficiency, and allows for ultra-high speeds while maintaining a smooth and quiet ride.


Transport experts say the 600 km/h maglev system bridges the gap between traditional high-speed rail and air travel, offering a competitive alternative for medium-distance routes. The projected 2.5-hour Beijing–Shanghai trip could transform intercity mobility, business travel, and regional economic integration.


Beyond speed, the train is designed with sustainability in mind. The system produces zero direct pollution during operation and generates lower noise levels compared to conventional rail systems, aligning with global efforts to develop cleaner and more environmentally friendly transportation infrastructure.
