Fincantieri Partners Generative Bionics to Develop AI-Powered Humanoid Welding Robots for Shipyards

Four-year collaboration will introduce autonomous humanoid systems designed to work safely alongside humans, advancing robotics in naval manufacturing

Fincantieri has announced the launch of a major industrial partnership with Generative Bionics, marking a significant step toward deploying autonomous humanoid robots in shipyard operations. The collaboration aims to design and implement a humanoid welding robot capable of operating alongside human workers in complex naval manufacturing environments.


As the initial focus of the partnership, the project will develop a humanoid system to support specific welding activities in Fincantieri’s shipyards. The robot will be equipped with artificial intelligence, advanced manipulation, perception, and computer vision technologies to precisely monitor welding seams, alongside optimized locomotion that enables safe movement across tight, uneven, and industrially demanding spaces.


Safety and collaboration are central to the initiative. According to the companies, the humanoid robot will be designed to prioritize worker safety, fully comply with applicable regulations, and operate without restricting work areas—allowing seamless human–robot collaboration on the shop floor. The system’s sensing and decision-making capabilities are intended to reduce risk while improving consistency and efficiency in welding tasks.


The partnership is expected to span four years and forms part of Fincantieri’s broader strategy in advanced robotics and innovation, a key pillar of the Group’s new Industrial Plan. By integrating cutting-edge robotics into shipbuilding, the company aims to enhance productivity, support skilled labor, and modernize manufacturing processes without displacing human expertise.
