Security expert and public safety advocate, Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has warned Nigerians against leaving their phones unattended or handing unlocked devices to strangers while charging in public places, saying such actions could expose users to theft, identity fraud and financial loss.
Yusuf gave the advice in Series 92 of The Secure Mind, his daily security awareness initiative dedicated to promoting preventive thinking and practical safety habits among individuals, families and communities.
Speaking on the theme, "Safety Measures for Charging Phones in Public," the security expert noted that mobile phones have become repositories of highly sensitive information, including personal records, banking details, passwords, photographs and confidential communications.
According to him, losing control of a phone, even for a few minutes, can expose users to serious security and privacy risks.
Yusuf advised members of the public to avoid handing their unlocked phones to strangers or leaving their devices unattended at charging points in markets, airports, motor parks, shopping malls and other public places.
He also warned against sharing passwords, PINs, security codes or other confidential information with anyone, regardless of the circumstances.
Where the use of a public charging service is unavoidable, Yusuf recommended choosing only trusted and reputable providers while remaining close to the device throughout the charging period to minimise the risk of theft or unauthorised access.
The security expert stressed that protecting a mobile phone goes beyond safeguarding a physical device, noting that it also means protecting one's identity, finances and personal information from cybercriminals and other malicious actors.
“Protect your phone as carefully as you protect your personal identity,” he said.
Through The Secure Mind, Moruf Yusuf continues to educate Nigerians on practical security measures that encourage vigilance, crime prevention and responsible decision-making in everyday life.
Moruf Yusuf, also known as Ojogbon, holds professional affiliations and qualifications including ANIPR, MISN, FCAI, FIIM and MSPSP.
