The Federal Government has approved the procurement of 35 additional linear accelerators as part of efforts to improve access to cancer treatment across the country.
The equipment is expected to strengthen Nigeria's radiotherapy capacity and expand access to specialised cancer treatment for patients in different parts of the country.
Linear accelerators are medical devices used primarily to deliver highly targeted radiation in the treatment of cancer. Increasing their availability could help reduce pressure on existing treatment centres and improve access to radiotherapy services.
The approval forms part of broader government efforts to strengthen cancer care infrastructure and address gaps in access to specialised treatment.
The Federal Government's move is also expected to support the distribution of cancer-treatment capacity beyond major urban centres, potentially reducing the burden on patients who have to travel long distances to access radiotherapy.
