Obama made the remarks during a conversation with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at Salem State University in Massachusetts, where he reflected on leadership and governance.
“Even when I was president, I sometimes fantasised about if you put women in charge of every government for like two years and then just kind of saw, all right, how are things going?” Obama said.
He added that he believed things would be better, although not perfect, if women were given leadership of governments around the world.
The former president’s comments attracted attention online and were later raised with Trump during an exchange with reporters.
Trump rejected Obama’s view when asked whether he agreed with the statement.
“It’s ridiculous. I love women, I think they’re great. But what a ridiculous statement that is,” Trump said.
Obama has expressed a similar view in the past. In 2019, during a leadership event in Singapore, he said he believed the world would experience improvements if women ran every country for two years.
The latest exchange has reignited discussion about women in political leadership, gender and governance, with Obama presenting his position as a personal belief about leadership and Trump publicly disagreeing with it.
