The incident occurred on Saturday, September 26, 2026, during routine screening at the custodial facility. According to the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, correctional officers intercepted Balikis at about 3:50 p.m. while she was allegedly attempting to deliver the substance to an inmate.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Odukoya, said the substance was identified as ethanol and had been disguised as ordinary drinking water.
He said the officers detected the substance before it could reach the inmate population and prevented it from entering the facility.
Following her arrest, Balikis was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution, according to the correctional service.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun State Command, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, reaffirmed the service’s zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of contraband into custodial facilities.
Adesina commended the correctional officers for their vigilance and said the interception demonstrated the command’s commitment to maintaining safety, discipline and order within the facility.
The command also assured the public that it would continue to strengthen security measures to prevent prohibited substances and other contraband from being introduced into custodial centres.
The latest incident comes weeks after another woman was arrested at the same Ibara facility for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs to an inmate.
The correctional service has continued to emphasise the importance of strict screening at custodial facilities as authorities work to prevent activities that could compromise security and undermine the integrity of the correctional system.
