FCT Teachers Directed to Join Nationwide Strike Starting Today

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, has ordered all primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to participate in the ongoing industrial action organized by the Joint Union Action Committee, citing unresolved welfare and salary issues.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, has instructed all primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory to join the ongoing strike action spearheaded by the Joint Union Action Committee, effective today.

In a statement released by the union, officials cited long-standing grievances over teacher welfare, delayed salaries, and the failure of relevant authorities to implement agreed-upon salary structures and working conditions. The union emphasized that the industrial action is a necessary measure to compel the government to address the challenges facing educators in the territory.

The strike is expected to disrupt academic activities across public schools in the FCT, affecting students from basic to secondary education levels. Parents have been urged to make alternative arrangements for their children while the strike is ongoing.

This directive aligns the FCT teachers with the nationwide strike action currently affecting various states, aimed at pressuring the Federal Government to implement salary adjustments under the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and other pending welfare policies.

Education stakeholders have expressed concern over the impact of prolonged strikes on learning outcomes, stressing the urgent need for dialogue between government authorities and teacher unions to resolve the impasse and restore stability in the education sector.

The NUT has assured that the strike will continue until the government addresses the union’s demands, urging both teachers and the public to cooperate in ensuring the protest is conducted peacefully.
