Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of Dubai’s ruling family and younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has passed away.
The announcement was made on Monday, September 21, 2026, by the Dubai Ruler’s Court, which also declared a 10-day period of official mourning across the emirate.
During the mourning period, flags across Dubai will be flown at half-mast as the emirate honours Sheikh Ahmed.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, paid tribute to his late brother, expressing his grief and praying for his soul.
In a message mourning Sheikh Ahmed, Sheikh Mohammed described him as his brother and prayed that Allah would grant him a place in Paradise while giving his family and loved ones patience and comfort.
Sheikh Ahmed, who was 76, held prominent responsibilities in Dubai and was known for his involvement in public service and the emirate’s affairs.
His death has prompted tributes from members of Dubai’s ruling family and officials, as the emirate enters the officially declared mourning period.
The 10-day mourning period began on Monday and will run with flags flown at half-mast across Dubai in accordance with the announcement by the Ruler’s Court.
Further details regarding funeral prayers and other official arrangements are expected to be announced by the relevant authorities.
The death marks a significant loss for Dubai’s ruling Al Maktoum family, with Sheikh Ahmed’s passing being mourned across the emirate.
