Nigeria Ranks Fifth Among English-Speaking African Countries in 2025 EF English Proficiency Index

Latest Education First report ranks Nigeria as a top performer in English language skills, highlighting improvements in education and communication across the nation.

Nigeria has been ranked the fifth-best English-speaking country in Africa, according to the 2025 Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index. The annual report, which assesses non-native English-speaking countries based on reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, reflects a growing proficiency in English across Nigeria.

The EF English Proficiency Index evaluates millions of test-takers globally, providing insights into language learning trends and highlighting the importance of English as a tool for education, business, and international engagement. Nigeria’s ranking places it ahead of several African nations, signaling the country’s commitment to enhancing language education and communication skills among its citizens.

Education experts note that this achievement can be attributed to increased access to English-medium education, teacher training programs, and initiatives aimed at improving literacy and language skills nationwide. The report also serves as a benchmark for policymakers and educators to identify areas of improvement while celebrating successes in the education sector.

While Nigeria trails behind four other African countries in the ranking, stakeholders view the fifth-place position as an encouragement to continue investing in language education, particularly in rural and underserved communities, to ensure that the country can compete more effectively on the global stage.

The EF English Proficiency Index has become a key resource for governments, schools, and corporations seeking to understand English competency levels, and Nigeria’s improved position underscores the nation’s potential to strengthen its global communication and education standards.
