Reverse WAEC, NECO Fee Hike or Risk More Out-of-School Children, Atiku Tells Tinubu

Former vice president warns that rising examination fees could force more Nigerian students out of the education system.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Tinubu to reverse the recent increase in the fees charged for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO), warning that the development could worsen Nigeria's out-of-school children crisis.

Atiku expressed concern that higher examination fees would place additional financial pressure on struggling families, making it more difficult for many students to complete their secondary education.

According to him, increasing the cost of public examinations at a time of widespread economic hardship could deny thousands of qualified students the opportunity to sit for their final examinations.

The former vice president warned that unless the Federal Government reviews the fee increase, more children could be forced out of school, further worsening the country's education challenges.

He called on the Tinubu administration to prioritise affordable access to education by reversing the fee hike and implementing policies that support students and their families.

Atiku maintained that investing in education remains essential to national development and urged the government to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent young Nigerians from completing their education.
