Security expert and public safety advocate, Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has advised parents to introduce their children to the basics of their lawful trades, professions, businesses and vocations as part of efforts to prepare them for a secure and successful future.
Yusuf gave the advice in Series 89 of The Secure Mind, his daily security awareness initiative aimed at training people to think carefully about personal safety, family security and responsible living.
In the latest edition, titled “Learning Parents’ Work Strengthens a Child’s Future,” Yusuf explained that while formal education remains important, children can benefit greatly from learning practical skills connected to what their parents do for a living.
According to him, education should not be limited to what children learn within the four walls of a classroom. Exposure to practical and lawful work can help young people develop useful skills, confidence, responsibility and a better understanding of the value of honest labour.
He noted that children who understand the basics of their parents’ work may be better prepared to support a family business when necessary, build on an existing legacy or use the knowledge acquired to create opportunities for themselves in the future.
Yusuf explained that unexpected changes in life can affect families, businesses and careers, making it important for children to have practical knowledge and skills alongside their academic qualifications.
The security expert, however, cautioned that introducing children to a family trade or profession must be done responsibly.
He stressed that such exposure should be suitable for the child’s age, must not interfere with formal education and should only involve lawful and ethical activities.
According to him, the purpose of teaching children practical skills is to build character, responsibility and independence, not to expose them to child labour or deny them the opportunity to receive proper education.
Yusuf also linked practical skills development to personal security and crime prevention, noting that young people who grow up with useful knowledge, strong values and an appreciation for legitimate work may be better equipped to make wise decisions and resist criminal influences.
He encouraged parents to see themselves not only as providers but also as teachers whose knowledge, experience and work ethics can become valuable lessons for their children.
“Teaching children practical life skills today equips them to face tomorrow’s challenges with confidence and integrity,” Yusuf said.
Through The Secure Mind series, Yusuf continues to promote preventive security thinking, responsible citizenship and practical awareness as tools for building safer individuals, families and communities.
