Security expert urges Nigerians to protect personal information when selling, giving away or disposing of old phones.

Security expert Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has advised Nigerians to take proper security precautions before selling, giving away or discarding their old phones.

Yusuf gave the advice in Series #134 of The Secure Mind, titled “Ethics for Transferring Phones.”

He noted that used phones may contain personal, financial, professional and other sensitive information belonging to their previous owners.

According to him, simply deleting a few files before handing over an old device may not be enough to protect the former owner's privacy.

He advised users to sign out of connected accounts, remove personal information, disable device-tracking features where appropriate and perform a proper factory reset before transferring their phones.

Yusuf also urged users to back up important information before carrying out a factory reset to avoid losing valuable files.

He stressed that stopping the use of an old phone does not automatically disconnect the owner from the accounts, information and digital connections associated with the device.

A security-conscious individual, he said, should ensure that all personal accounts, information and connections have been properly removed before another person takes possession of the device.

“Old phones should be outrightly disconnected or reset to factory settings to avoid future embarrassment.”

He encouraged Nigerians to make proper phone disposal and transfer part of their everyday digital security practices.
