The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has claimed that some professors in Lagos State earn less than secondary school principals, describing the situation as a reflection of the declining welfare of university lecturers.
The union made the assertion while highlighting disparities in remuneration within the education sector, arguing that the current salary structure does not adequately reflect the qualifications, responsibilities and contributions of university academics.
According to ASUU, the poor remuneration of lecturers continues to fuel low morale, brain drain and challenges in Nigeria's tertiary education system, as many experienced academics seek better opportunities outside the country.
The union renewed its call on governments at all levels to prioritise investment in higher education by improving salaries, funding research, upgrading infrastructure and implementing agreements reached with university-based unions.
ASUU maintained that enhancing the welfare of lecturers is essential to improving the quality of teaching, research and innovation in Nigeria's universities and ensuring the country's long-term educational and economic development.
