Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has cautioned Nigerians against climbing electric poles or attempting to repair electrical installations, stressing that such tasks should only be carried out by trained and authorised professionals.
In Series #116 of The Secure Mind, titled "Only Qualified Professionals Should Climb Electric Poles," Yusuf highlighted the dangers associated with electricity, warning that a single mistake around power lines or electrical infrastructure can result in fatal electrocution, severe burns, fires or extensive damage to property.
According to him, electric poles and overhead power lines carry high-voltage electricity that poses significant risks to anyone without the appropriate training, protective equipment and authorisation.
He advised members of the public never to climb electric poles, tamper with transformers, interfere with power lines or attempt to repair electrical faults, regardless of the circumstances. Instead, he urged individuals to promptly report faults, damaged installations, illegal electricity connections or fallen power lines to the relevant electricity distribution company or appropriate authorities.
Yusuf also warned against constructing buildings or carrying out activities too close to electric poles and other electrical installations, noting that such practices increase the likelihood of electrocution and other serious safety hazards.
The security expert emphasised that electricity should always be treated with caution and respect, adding that adherence to safety regulations is essential to protecting lives, preventing accidents and safeguarding critical infrastructure.
He called on communities to support public safety efforts by discouraging unsafe practices around electrical facilities and educating children about the dangers of playing near power installations.
According to Yusuf, promoting electrical safety is a shared responsibility that requires cooperation between electricity distribution companies, government agencies and members of the public.
"Electricity is unforgiving. Stay clear of electric poles and leave the job to authorized professionals."
