A cross-sectional study published on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) platform has found that approximately 40.19 per cent of Nigerian medical and dental students surveyed engage in online gambling, while 10.42 per cent exhibit signs consistent with a potential gambling disorder.
According to the study, the findings highlight the growing prevalence of online gambling among students in Nigeria's tertiary institutions and raise concerns about its possible impact on mental health, academic performance and financial wellbeing.
The researchers noted that while many students participate in online betting recreationally, a significant proportion display behaviours that may indicate problematic gambling, underscoring the need for early intervention and support.
The study recommended increased awareness campaigns, improved access to mental health services, student counselling programmes and stronger preventive measures within higher institutions to address gambling-related risks.
Experts say the findings underscore the importance of promoting responsible gambling education and providing targeted support for students who may be vulnerable to gambling addiction as online betting platforms continue to expand their reach across Nigeria.
