The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force studied policing models in India, the United States and Pakistan as part of ongoing discussions on the proposed establishment of state police in Nigeria.
Speaking on the issue, the IGP said the comparative study was aimed at understanding how different federal systems organise and manage policing at national and sub-national levels.
"We studied the India, America and Pakistan model," the IGP said.
According to the police chief, the findings from the study are intended to provide valuable insights that could guide policymakers as Nigeria continues to debate the merits, structure and implementation of state policing.
The proposal for state police has remained a subject of national discourse, with supporters arguing that decentralised policing would improve local security, intelligence gathering and response to crime, while critics have raised concerns about possible political interference, funding and oversight.
The Federal Government and relevant stakeholders are expected to continue consultations as discussions on police reform and the future of state policing evolve.
