Chiwetalu Agu Sparks Debate on Double Standards in Men’s and Women’s Sexual Past

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has sparked discussion after commenting on the different standards he believes society applies to the sexual histories of men and women.

Agu argued that men may have multiple sexual partners before eventually marrying a woman who is willing to settle down with them, while women with comparatively fewer partners may face rejection because of their past.

“A man can sleep with 30–40 women and still end up marrying a woman who is ready to settle down with him. But a woman can sleep with 7–10 men and end up being rejected simply because of her past,” Agu said.

The veteran actor’s remarks have drawn attention to the contrasting expectations surrounding relationships, marriage and sexual history in Nigerian society.

His comments point to a long-running social debate over whether men and women are judged by different standards when it comes to premarital relationships and their suitability for marriage.

While some people argue that individuals should be free to consider a prospective partner’s past when making personal relationship decisions, others contend that applying significantly different standards to men and women reflects a broader social double standard.

The debate also touches on wider questions about forgiveness, personal growth and whether a person’s past relationships should determine how they are viewed later in life.

Agu, who has remained a prominent figure in Nollywood for decades, is known for his outspoken views on social and cultural issues. His latest statement has once again placed conversations about relationships, gender expectations and marriage at the centre of public discussion.
