The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has raised concerns over increasingly sophisticated methods being used to adulterate palm oil, urging residents to exercise caution when purchasing the widely consumed cooking product.
The agency’s warning comes amid concerns that adulterated palm oil may be difficult for consumers to identify through appearance alone, particularly as unscrupulous sellers may use substances or additives designed to make the product resemble genuine palm oil.
Palm oil remains a major ingredient in many Nigerian households and is widely used in the preparation of soups, stews, fried foods and other meals. Its widespread consumption makes the quality and safety of the product an important consumer protection issue.
LASCOPA advised residents to be more careful about where they purchase palm oil and to avoid products from questionable or unverified sources. Consumers were also encouraged to pay attention to unusual changes in the colour, smell, texture or general appearance of palm oil before purchasing or consuming it.
The agency stressed the importance of consumer awareness, particularly as adulteration techniques become more sophisticated and may not always be immediately obvious.
Residents who suspect that palm oil or other food products have been adulterated are encouraged to report such concerns to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
The warning also highlights the broader need for consumers to remain vigilant about the quality of food products sold in markets and other outlets across Lagos State.
LASCOPA’s advisory reinforces the importance of purchasing food products from reputable sources and seeking clarification or assistance whenever the safety or authenticity of a product is in doubt.
