The Federal Government has said deeper cooperation between Nigeria and China in the power sector will help improve electricity supply, expand renewable energy development and promote the local manufacturing of power equipment in Nigeria.
The government said the partnership could play an important role in addressing some of the longstanding challenges affecting Nigeria’s electricity sector while strengthening the country’s capacity to develop and maintain power infrastructure.
According to the Federal Government, greater collaboration with China could provide opportunities for investment, technical expertise, technology transfer and the development of local capacity across different segments of the power value chain.
The partnership is expected to support efforts to increase the availability and reliability of electricity for households, businesses and industries.
Renewable energy is also expected to form an important part of the cooperation, particularly as Nigeria seeks to diversify its energy sources and expand access to electricity in communities that remain underserved by the national grid.
The government said cooperation with Chinese companies and institutions could also support the production of power equipment locally. This could reduce reliance on imported equipment over time while creating opportunities for Nigerian manufacturers and skilled workers.
Local manufacturing of transformers, meters, cables and other electricity-related equipment could also strengthen the domestic power supply chain and contribute to job creation and industrial development.
Nigeria has continued to seek foreign investment and technical partnerships as part of efforts to address challenges in its electricity sector, including inadequate generation and transmission capacity, distribution losses and infrastructure limitations.
The Federal Government said stronger Nigeria-China cooperation would therefore complement ongoing reforms and investments aimed at improving the performance of the power sector.
For consumers, the ultimate objective of the proposed cooperation is to translate investment and technical collaboration into more reliable electricity, greater access to renewable energy and improved availability of locally produced power equipment.
The government is expected to continue discussions with Chinese partners as both countries explore opportunities to deepen cooperation in Nigeria’s energy and broader infrastructure sectors.
