One of the most careless ways of handling a private conversation is to put a phone call on speaker without informing the person on the other end. This can happen among both young and older people, particularly when discussing sensitive matters, making enquiries, giving reports, seeking advice or resolving personal issues.
People often speak freely on the phone because they believe they are having a private conversation with one person. They may share personal information, confidential matters, advice, warnings, concerns or grievances without knowing that other people are listening.
Friends speak with friends, colleagues communicate with one another, and people share sensitive information with those they trust. When such conversations are placed on speaker without notification, the privacy and trust attached to the conversation can easily be compromised.
There may be situations where using speaker mode is necessary or convenient. However, the person on the other end should be informed, especially when another person is present and can hear the conversation.
Seeking permission before putting a private call on speaker is a simple act of courtesy, respect and responsible communication. It allows the other person to decide whether they are comfortable continuing the conversation in the presence of someone else.
A security-conscious person should understand that trust comes with responsibility. When someone shares information with you privately, you should treat that information with the same respect you expect when you are the one speaking.
Confidentiality should not be taken for granted. Before putting a sensitive conversation on speaker, pause and consider whether the person you are speaking with knows that someone else may be listening.
