Goodluck Jonathan: “The 2027 Election Will Test Our Democratic Maturity”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, unity and justice as the country prepares for the 2027 general election, warning that the next electoral cycle will provide a test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity.

Jonathan made the remarks in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the country marked its 66th anniversary of independence.

The former President called on citizens to remain patriotic and committed to the unity of the country as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” Jonathan said.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence in 1960, Jonathan acknowledged the numerous challenges the country has experienced but said Nigerians had repeatedly demonstrated resilience in confronting difficult periods.

He urged citizens to remain hopeful and united, stressing that Nigeria’s future depends on the collective efforts of its people.

“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands,” he said.

Jonathan said Nigeria possesses significant opportunities for sustainable development if the country can effectively harness its diversity as well as its abundant human and natural resources.

He particularly encouraged young Nigerians to remain hopeful and courageous while contributing to efforts to build a better country for future generations.

“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.

The former President also placed responsibility on leaders at all levels, calling for greater patriotism and accountability in addressing the country’s social and economic challenges.

According to him, leaders must be prepared to make personal sacrifices, promote good governance and uphold the rule of law.

“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” Jonathan said.

“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law.”

On the approaching elections, his message focused on the importance of maintaining peace and democratic stability throughout the electoral process.

He urged Nigerians to avoid actions that could threaten national unity and instead contribute to an environment where political competition can take place peacefully.

Jonathan further called on citizens to remain committed to national service and work towards building a country that is peaceful, secure and equitable.

“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he said.

His message comes as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 general elections, with political activities expected to increase in the months ahead.

Jonathan’s comments also place emphasis on the responsibility of both citizens and political leaders to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions and ensure that political differences do not undermine peace and national cohesion.

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the former President urged citizens to look towards the future with hope while recognising the responsibilities required to build a stronger nation.

His central message was that the 2027 electoral season should be approached with patriotism, restraint and a commitment to peace, unity, justice, accountability and the rule of law.
