People are connected in different ways, and these connections form relationships. Whether through family, friendship, work, shared interests, religion or community, relationships should be treated with care, respect and understanding.
Good relationships do not maintain themselves. They require communication, tolerance, fairness and a willingness to understand one another. This is important not only within families but also in our communities, workplaces, social gatherings and religious environments.
The fact that a particular person is disliked by an individual or group should not automatically determine how we relate with that person. We should learn to form our own judgments based on fairness, facts and personal interactions rather than allowing prejudice, rumours or group opinions to influence our relationships.
Our religious, ethnic or social affiliations should also not become reasons to create unnecessary divisions. Differences in beliefs, backgrounds or opinions should be handled with maturity and mutual respect. When relationships are constantly damaged by intolerance and division, the peace and development of the wider community can also suffer.
A security-conscious person understands that words, actions and decisions can either strengthen or weaken relationships. Careless words can create conflict, while unhealthy attitudes can break family and community ties.
Maintaining cordial relationships is therefore an important part of building peaceful, united and progressive communities. We should learn to disagree without hatred, correct one another without humiliation and relate with people without unnecessary hostility.
As individuals and as a nation, we must be mindful of actions and attitudes that could create tribal differences, weaken our unity and undermine peaceful coexistence.
Just be good. Reflect. Stay alert.
