Federal Government to Withdraw Passports from Citizens Who Renounced Nigerian Citizenship

FG Moves to Enforce Stricter Passport Control Measures Following Citizenship Renunciation Policy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that it will withdraw international passports from individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship, as part of efforts to strengthen immigration control and safeguard national identity systems.

According to immigration authorities, the policy is aimed at ensuring that only legally recognized citizens of Nigeria retain access to Nigerian travel documents. Officials explained that once citizenship is officially renounced, all associated privileges, including passport ownership, will be revoked in line with existing legal provisions.

The government noted that the implementation will involve verification processes to identify affected individuals and ensure compliance across immigration databases and border management systems.

The announcement has generated public discussion, particularly among Nigerians in the diaspora, with concerns raised about documentation processes, timing of revocation, and potential administrative challenges during transition of citizenship status.

Authorities maintain that the measure is part of broader reforms to improve document integrity and prevent misuse of Nigerian passports after citizenship status has changed.

The policy will be enforced under the framework of the Nigeria immigration laws and implemented by the Nigeria Immigration Service.
