The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has confirmed that a Nigerian citizen was placed on a security watchlist by South African authorities after previously posting insulting remarks about the South African government on social media.
According to the commission, the individual only became aware of the watchlist status while attempting to enter South Africa through one of the country’s international airports. Immigration officials reportedly flagged the traveler during routine checks, prompting further scrutiny of his entry into the country.
The development highlights how online statements and digital footprints can influence immigration decisions and border security checks in some countries. Authorities in several jurisdictions increasingly monitor public online content, particularly posts perceived as threatening, offensive, or directed at state institutions.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission noted that the incident serves as a reminder for citizens travelling abroad to be mindful of their online conduct, as social media activities can have real world implications when interacting with foreign governments and immigration authorities.
Officials also advised Nigerians living or travelling overseas to remain respectful in their public communications and to be aware that statements made online may be reviewed by authorities during visa applications or border entry processes.
