The Federal Government has suspended the proposed review of registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination.
According to the government, the decision was taken to allow for broader consultations with key stakeholders before any adjustment to the examination fees is implemented.
The suspension follows concerns raised by parents, students, education stakeholders and civil society groups over the potential impact of higher registration fees on access to secondary education.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that policies affecting the education sector are developed through inclusive dialogue and in the best interest of Nigerian students.
It added that discussions with relevant stakeholders would help determine a sustainable approach that balances the financial needs of examination bodies with the need to keep public examinations affordable.
With the latest decision, the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO Senior School Certificate Examinations will not take effect until the consultation process is concluded and a final decision is reached.
