The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its affiliates and workers across the country to prepare for a fresh struggle for a new national minimum wage, declaring that the current ₦70,000 minimum wage is no longer sufficient to meet the needs of Nigerian workers.
The labour union described the existing wage as a "poverty wage," arguing that soaring inflation and the rising cost of living have significantly reduced its purchasing power.
According to the NLC, Nigerian workers deserve a wage that reflects current economic realities and enables them to meet their basic needs with dignity.
The Congress said it is mobilising its affiliates nationwide for what it described as a serious battle to secure a new and improved national minimum wage, insisting that workers should not continue to bear the burden of the country's economic challenges.
The development signals the possibility of renewed negotiations between organised labour, the Federal Government and employers over the review of workers' salaries in response to prevailing economic conditions.
