Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has called on the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to review the visa applications of South African artistes seeking entry into Nigeria, urging the government to adopt a reciprocal approach over the alleged treatment of Nigerian music star Ayra Starr by South African authorities.
The Kogi Central senator made the call amid growing public reactions to reports that Ayra Starr allegedly faced visa-related challenges in South Africa.
According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Nigeria should ensure that its immigration policies reflect the principle of reciprocity in its dealings with other countries, particularly where Nigerian citizens are perceived to have been treated unfairly.
She argued that Nigerian authorities should carefully examine visa requests from South African entertainers until concerns surrounding the alleged treatment of Nigerian artistes are adequately addressed.
The senator's remarks come against the backdrop of renewed public debate over diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa, with some Nigerians calling for stronger measures to protect the rights and interests of Nigerian citizens abroad.
