Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has called on the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to mandate Nigerian newscasters and on-air personalities to wear made-in-Nigeria clothes and speak with Nigerian accents while on air.
Omokri made the call in a social media post, arguing that the media should play a greater role in promoting Nigerian culture and local industries.
“Mandate Nigerian newscasters and on-air personalities to wear made-in-Nigeria clothes and speak in Nigerian accents,” Omokri said.
He criticised what he described as the growing use of foreign attire and foreign or contrived accents by Nigerian media personalities.
Omokri said promoting locally made clothing and Nigerian accents through the media could help strengthen national identity and support local businesses.
The proposal has generated mixed reactions, with supporters welcoming the idea of promoting Nigerian culture, while others have questioned whether such requirements should be mandatory for media professionals.
