The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned manufacturers, distributors and retailers of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200ml to comply with the Federal Government’s ban or face regulatory sanctions.
NAFDAC said affected manufacturers must commence a nationwide recall of the prohibited products, which will be inventoried and destroyed under the agency’s supervision, with manufacturers bearing the cost.
The agency warned that defaulting manufacturers could face heavy fines, factory closure, suspension or withdrawal of product registrations and other legal sanctions.
The ban on alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET/plastic bottles below 200ml took effect on January 1, 2026, following concerns over the accessibility of small-packaged alcoholic drinks, particularly to underage consumers.
NAFDAC said enforcement has now been intensified nationwide, covering manufacturers as well as markets, retail outlets, bars, motor parks and distribution centres.
