Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has promised to introduce a monthly living minimum wage of N500,000 for Nigerian workers and provide 24-hour electricity if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Sowore made the promises while outlining his party’s agenda ahead of the election, arguing that Nigerian workers deserve wages that reflect the rising cost of living.
He said his administration would pursue what he described as a “revolutionary” approach to governance, with the goal of improving the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians.
“We are proposing a ₦500,000 monthly living minimum wage because Nigerian workers cannot continue receiving starvation wages while senators, governors and political appointees consume millions every month,” Sowore said.
On electricity, the AAC candidate promised to deliver 24-hour power supply, arguing that a serious industrial economy cannot continue to depend heavily on generators.
“We will deliver 24-hour electricity because no serious industrial economy can operate permanently on generators,” he said.
Sowore also pledged to make education free and accessible at all levels, saying no Nigerian child should be denied education because of their parents’ financial circumstances.
His proposed agenda further includes the construction of one million public mixed-income homes and reforms to tenancy laws aimed at reducing the burden of paying one or two years’ rent in advance.
On healthcare, the AAC candidate said it should be treated as a right rather than a privilege available only to Nigerians who can afford to travel abroad for medical treatment.
Sowore also promised to industrialise the country, expand agricultural production and processing, rebuild infrastructure and create what he described as dignified employment opportunities.
On security, he proposed better compensation for security personnel and greater use of technology, including drones and advanced intelligence systems, to tackle insecurity.
The activist also pledged an aggressive campaign against corruption and promised to recover public resources allegedly stolen by political officeholders.
Sowore said his party would run a “people-funded campaign” rather than depend on wealthy individuals or political patrons.
The AAC candidate emerged as his party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election after being selected by consensus. He has acknowledged the party’s relatively low vote totals in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections but argued that its chances have improved ahead of the 2027 contest.
The promises come amid renewed national discussions over workers’ wages, inflation, electricity supply and the rising cost of living. Organised labour has also renewed calls for a review of the N70,000 national minimum wage as inflation continues to affect workers’ purchasing power.
Sowore’s proposed N500,000 wage and 24-hour electricity pledge are therefore likely to become major talking points as political parties and presidential candidates present their programmes to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 election.
