Nigeria’s allocation for the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage has increased from 50,000 to 60,000 pilgrims after the Saudi Arabian authorities approved an additional 10,000 slots for the country.
The development means 60,000 Nigerian Muslims will be eligible to participate in the 2027 pilgrimage, subject to the completion of the required registration, payment and other Hajj procedures.
The additional allocation follows engagements between Nigerian authorities and their Saudi counterparts as preparations for the 2027 Hajj continue.
The increase is expected to provide more Nigerian Muslims with the opportunity to undertake the annual pilgrimage to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.
Hajj remains one of the five pillars of Islam and is required of Muslims who are physically and financially able to undertake the journey.
For Nigerian pilgrims, preparations typically involve registration, medical screening, travel arrangements, accommodation, transportation and other logistical requirements coordinated by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in collaboration with state-level pilgrimage authorities.
The additional 10,000 slots are also expected to increase the number of Nigerians travelling to Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage and may require corresponding arrangements for accommodation, transportation, healthcare and other services.
Authorities are expected to provide further details on the distribution of the additional slots among states and pilgrimage operators as preparations for the 2027 Hajj advance.
The increase from 50,000 to 60,000 represents a 20 per cent rise in Nigeria’s previously allocated quota and comes as Nigerian authorities prepare for another major annual religious travel exercise.
