From Bail to Jail: Sowore Faces Fresh Charges Over Criticizing President Tinubu

Abuja, Nigeria – Human rights activist and #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaigner Omoyele Sowore has been re-arrested by police shortly after securing bail on charges of unlawful assembly and disturbing public peace. He is expected to be arraigned on Monday, October 27, on a fresh five-count charge related to his claim that President Bola Tinubu is a ‘criminal.’

Sowore, who met bail conditions alongside Nnamdi Kanu’s brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, former lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, and ten others, was whisked away to Kuje Prison immediately after court proceedings. The fresh charge stems from a social media post on X (formerly Twitter) in which Sowore criticized Tinubu’s Brazil trip and called the President a criminal.

The Department of State Services (DSS) filed the charge, accusing Sowore of publishing “false and inciting statements” that could “cause public disturbance, disunity, and even insurrection.” Sowore had refused to delete the post, asserting his right to free expression.

Sowore has also filed two fundamental rights suits against the DSS, Meta Inc., and X Corp, challenging what he describes as “unconstitutional censorship” and warning that allowing state agencies to dictate online speech threatens the freedom of all Nigerians.

The case has reignited debates over press freedom, social media regulation, and political dissent in Nigeria.
