The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has announced a strict ban on unauthorized video production activities within its campus, warning skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators against using university facilities without permission.
In a statement signed by the institution’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, on Thursday, October 28, UNILAG expressed concern over the rising cases of individuals filming skits, movies, and other content on campus — including in hostels — without official clearance.
“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities without appropriate authorisation,” the statement read.
The university explained that the move aims to protect its academic environment and preserve the institution’s image from misrepresentation in unregulated productions.
It added that all filming requests must now be directed to the Communications Unit, where approval will be granted after due process to ensure decorum, safety, and institutional integrity.
The statement concluded with a warning:
“Members of the University community and the general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility.”
The directive has sparked discussions among students and creators, some of whom argue that UNILAG’s picturesque campus has long been a creative hub for aspiring filmmakers and influencers.
