Madagascar’s new government has officially revoked the Malagasy nationality of ousted president Andry Rajoelina, just 10 days after he was removed from power in a military coup.
The decree, published on October 25, cites Rajoelina’s voluntary acquisition of French nationality in 2014 as the reason for the revocation, in accordance with Malagasy law. The move effectively bars him from contesting future elections.
Rajoelina fled the country after opposition protests escalated and Colonel Michael Randrianirina assumed power, promising stability and elections within two years. The former president had previously faced controversy over his dual nationality during the 2023 elections.
