The National Union of Electricity Employees says it will halt power operations nationwide unless action is taken against officers who allegedly assaulted workers in Imo State.
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide shutdown following an alleged attack on staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) by armed police officers at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State.
According to the union, the incident occurred when armed police personnel reportedly stormed the facility and assaulted TCN workers on duty, creating tension and raising safety concerns across the power sector.
NUEE described the incident as “unacceptable, dangerous, and a direct attack on the nation’s power stability.” The union insists that electricity workers cannot operate under threats, intimidation, or violence and demanded immediate action from the federal government and relevant security authorities.
The union warned that unless those involved in the assault are identified, investigated, and sanctioned, they will have no choice but to shut down power operations across the country. Such an action could result in a total nationwide blackout, affecting industries, homes, and essential services.
NUEE further urged the government to strengthen security around power installations, stressing that attacks on critical infrastructure jeopardize national economic and security interests.
The situation continues to develop, with Nigerians anxiously watching to see whether the federal government will intervene to prevent a shutdown of the country’s already fragile power supply.
