Security expert Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has called for security and safety awareness to be made an important part of learning in Nigerian primary and secondary schools.
Yusuf made the call in Series #125 of The Secure Mind, titled “Security and Safety Awareness Should Be Taught in Schools.”
According to him, children are highly impressionable, and the lessons they learn early can shape their behaviour and decision-making for years to come.
He identified areas such as personal safety, emergency response, road safety, fire prevention, bullying and responsible behaviour as important aspects of safety education that should be introduced to children.
Yusuf stressed that teaching children how to recognise danger, respond appropriately during emergencies and protect themselves and others can help build a more safety-conscious generation.
He urged parents, schools, government agencies and other stakeholders to work together to ensure that children's safety is treated as a priority both within and outside the school environment.
The security expert maintained that a society that genuinely values security must place the safety and well-being of its children at the centre of its security planning.
“A stronger society builds security around its children.”
He urged stakeholders to start security education early, stressing that building a safer society begins with teaching children how to stay safe.
