Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has urged Nigerians to store and handle gas cylinders properly, warning that poor storage practices can increase the risk of gas leaks, fires and explosions.
In Series #119 of The Secure Mind, titled "Know the Categories of Gas Cylinders and Where to Place Them," Yusuf noted that many Nigerians use gas cylinders regularly without having sufficient knowledge about their different types, sizes and safety requirements.
He explained that Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or cooking gas cylinders commonly come in sizes such as 3kg, 6kg, 12.5kg and 50kg, stressing that all cylinders must be handled and stored with appropriate care.
According to Yusuf, LPG is heavier than air, meaning that leaked gas can settle at floor level and accumulate in poorly ventilated spaces, potentially creating a dangerous environment.
He advised users to keep LPG cylinders upright on stable ground, in a well-ventilated location, and away from heat, flames, sparks and other sources of ignition.
The security expert also stressed that the cylinder's shut-off valve should remain easily accessible, allowing users to turn off the gas supply quickly when necessary.
Yusuf further noted that cylinders containing oxygen, acetylene and carbon dioxide (CO₂) are commonly used for medical, welding and industrial purposes and should be handled and stored according to the specific safety requirements applicable to each gas.
He warned members of the public against keeping gas cylinders in bedrooms, cupboards, enclosed spaces or poorly ventilated areas, where a gas leak could become particularly dangerous.
He also encouraged users to regularly inspect cylinders, regulators, hoses and connections for signs of damage or leakage and to seek assistance from qualified professionals whenever they suspect a fault.
Yusuf called for increased public awareness about gas safety, stressing that understanding how to properly position and handle gas cylinders can significantly reduce preventable domestic and workplace accidents.
He reminded Nigerians that while gas remains an important source of energy for households and businesses, responsible handling is essential to protecting lives and property.
