Security Expert and Public Safety Advocate Moruf Yusuf, popularly known as Ojogbon, has advised Nigerians to take simple but important precautions to prevent gas cylinder explosions and other cooking-gas-related accidents.
In Series #120 of The Secure Mind, titled "Easy Ways to Stop Gas Cylinder Explosion," Yusuf stressed the importance of regularly checking gas cylinders, hoses, regulators and cooker connections for faults or signs of wear.
He recommended using soapy water to check for leaks, particularly around the hose and valve. According to him, the appearance of bubbles after applying soapy water may indicate a gas leak.
Yusuf advised users to shut off the gas supply if it is safe to do so whenever a leak is suspected and to avoid actions that could ignite the gas.
He also urged Nigerians to turn off the cooker knob and cylinder valve after cooking and to keep gas cylinders in well-ventilated areas, preferably outdoors or in appropriately ventilated spaces, away from heat, flames, sparks and other ignition sources.
He stressed the need for adequate ventilation whenever cooking with gas to prevent the accumulation of leaked or unburned gas.
The security expert further advised households to use good-quality hoses and regulators and to replace damaged, cracked or worn-out components promptly rather than waiting until they completely fail.
Yusuf warned against the habit of continuing to use gas equipment until it stops working, stressing that preventive replacement can help avert potentially fatal accidents.
He also introduced the STOP safety reminder for suspected gas leaks:
- S — Stop using flames and avoid operating electrical switches.
- T — Turn off the cylinder valve if it is safe to do so.
- O — Open doors and windows to improve ventilation, if this can be done without creating a spark or other danger.
- P — Park out: Leave the building immediately and seek professional assistance.
He urged Nigerians to prioritise safety over convenience and to ensure that gas appliances and accessories are inspected and maintained regularly.
"Do not keep using a cylinder hose and cooker knob till it stops working."
