The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced the introduction of a Generator Noise Pollution Tax, making it mandatory for all businesses operating within Abuja to pay a levy for the use of power-generating sets. The policy is aimed at curbing noise pollution, promoting environmental sustainability, and improving the quality of life across the nation’s capital.
According to the FCTA, the decision follows growing concerns over the health and environmental impact of constant generator noise, particularly in commercial districts, residential neighborhoods, and mixed-use areas where businesses rely heavily on private power generation due to unstable electricity supply. Officials noted that prolonged exposure to high noise levels has been linked to stress, hearing impairment, and other public health challenges.
Under the new regulation, businesses using generators will be assessed and charged based on factors such as generator capacity, duration of use, and location. The administration explained that the revenue generated from the tax will be channeled toward environmental protection initiatives, noise monitoring enforcement, and broader urban infrastructure improvements within the Federal Capital Territory.
The FCTA emphasized that the policy is not intended to punish businesses but to encourage compliance with environmental standards and accelerate the transition to cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable energy alternatives. Business owners have been advised to explore options such as renewable energy solutions and soundproofing measures to reduce noise emissions.
While the announcement has sparked mixed reactions among business operators, the FCTA maintains that the Generator Noise Pollution Tax is a necessary step toward responsible urban management. Authorities added that enforcement guidelines and payment frameworks will be communicated clearly to ensure transparency and compliance as the policy takes effect.
