State government says the project was suspended following the devastating flood that affected Mokwa.

The World Bank halted the Mokwa erosion control project in Niger State following the devastating 2025 flood, a state government official has said.

The official said the suspension came after the flood affected the project area, creating new challenges that required a review of the planned intervention.

The Mokwa area suffered significant flooding in 2025, with the disaster destroying homes, businesses, infrastructure and farmlands and displacing residents.

The erosion control project was intended to address environmental and infrastructure risks in the area and protect communities from the effects of erosion and related hazards.

The reported suspension has raised concerns about the continued vulnerability of communities in Mokwa and the need for urgent interventions to strengthen flood and erosion control measures.

The Niger State Government is expected to continue engaging relevant stakeholders, including development partners, on measures to address the environmental challenges facing affected communities.
