Federal Government Seeks Turkey’s Support as Nigeria Intensifies Fight Against Rising Insecurity

FG explores strategic partnership with Turkey to strengthen security architecture, enhance military capacity and curb escalating threats across the country

The Federal Government of Nigeria has disclosed that it has formally approached Turkey for assistance in tackling the country’s worsening insecurity, as authorities intensify efforts to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes threatening national stability.

According to government officials, the move forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through international collaboration, technology transfer and advanced military support. Turkey, which has built a strong reputation in defense manufacturing, counterterrorism operations and security intelligence, is expected to play a key role in supporting Nigeria’s renewed security push.

The engagement with Turkey is aimed at exploring cooperation in areas such as military training, intelligence sharing, surveillance systems, and access to modern defense equipment, including drones and tactical hardware. Officials noted that Nigeria is prioritising partnerships with countries that have demonstrated practical success in combating internal security threats and asymmetric warfare.

Nigeria has continued to battle multiple security challenges across different regions, from insurgency in the North-East to banditry and kidnappings in the North-West and communal conflicts in parts of the Middle Belt and South. These challenges have placed increasing pressure on security agencies and heightened calls for decisive action and global partnerships.

Government sources emphasized that the approach to Turkey does not replace existing alliances but complements ongoing collaborations with other international partners. The goal, they said, is to adopt proven global best practices while strengthening local capacity to respond effectively to security threats.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace, protecting lives and property, and creating a safer environment for economic growth and national development. Officials assured Nigerians that engagements with strategic partners like Turkey are part of sustained efforts to achieve long-term security and stability across the country.
